It feels weird to spend so much time leveling a profession just to play as something that plays differently later on. I know some mechanics stay the same but so much changes also
If you are waiting to finish the story before doing the expansions, there are enough hero points in Central Tyria to be able to unlock a specialization. Map completion is also needed for first generation legendaries. You get two map completion tokens for doing it once, plus you get a cool star on your HP bar that other players can see.
If that's the story then I have 100% that step, twice just this morning. Still hasn't showed up with the letter on either character. But I did as you said, put a greatsword on my harbinger and it worked. So I guess solved. Didn't work yesterday, maybe redoing the story today silently fixed it. 1.
Level 1: Weapon skill #1 and Healing Utility slot unlocked. Level 8: All Weapon Skill slots unlocked. Level 19: All Utility Skill slots unlocked, all Profession Skills (F1-F4) unlocked. Level 21: First Core Specialization (what used to be called Traitlines) unlocked. Level 31: Elite Skill slot unlocked.
I'd say 2+ hours to get the elite spec unlocked, but may be longer if it is your first time or if you are not familiar with the maps. If you join an HP train, it depends. Fast ones will be 1 hour or less.
Save all the rest of your HP to complete the first Core Specialization at 21, the Elite Skill at 31, and the second Core Specialization at 45. Up till 45, HP are too scarce and you need to save as many as possible to complete those three as early as possible. Without the Core Specs, Mesmer is fairly weak.
